What Computer?
The complete buyer's guide

If you are new to computers, the jargon can seem more than a little daunting. This simple buyer's guide aims to help you through the terms and ensure you get the right computer for your needs.

The first point to consider is what you intend to use your computer for. There’s no point in buying a top-of-the-range computer with the fastest processor and memory, huge amounts of storage space and a powerful graphics card, if you only want to type some letters and use the Internet and email.

So the first thing to consider is usage. What do you need your computer to do? By considering this you help us to advise you best with hardware, the operating system and software applications.

Common computing tasks include:

  • Browsing the Internet
  • Using email
  • Online banking
  • Accounts and book keeping
  • Word Processing
  • Sending and receiving faxes
  • Spreadsheets, graphs and charts
  • Databases
  • Document and Photo scanning
  • Document and Photo printing
  • Gaming - CDROM games or online
  • Music playing, editing and CD creation
  • Playing or creating DVD movies
  • Home video editing
  • WEducation & Business Servicesite design
  • Photo editing and graphics programs
  • Home or Office Networking

This is by no means all computers can do, so think about your uses and then our professionals can advise you as to the appropriate specifications for your new PC.

Your next consideration is your budget. It is possible to have a high spec computer suitable for your needs without having to take out a second mortgage. Software is another consideration as this can push the budget above and beyond.

    The Hardware

Memory - The amount of memory required is dependent on the applications you intend to run. A Vista Premium PC requires 1 GB of system memory, and with falling prices this amount is quickly becoming the norm.

Processer (CPU) - The processor is the brains of a computer and its speed is measured in megahertz (MHz). A Vista Premium PC requires a 1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor).

Motherboard - A motherboard allows all the parts of your computer to receive power and communicate with one another. Everything that runs the computer or enhances its performance is either part of the motherboard or plugs into it via a slot or port. Some motherboards have additional devices built into them and are known as “all-in-one” motherboards. With these you usually do not need to buy a separate sound card or graphics card. This makes an economical option.

It is important that your motherboard, CPU, memory and hard drive specifications all compliment each other to gain stability and overall performance.
